Giraffes' Reading Group

Yesterday the Giraffes' reading group read an article about family treasures. Some of the children brought in their own family treasures to share with the group. Jarelle has a tonga similar to the one in the book. His tonga was carved out of bone by a man from Ngati Porou and gifted to his Dad to keep him safe on his life's journeys. The eye on the carving was made from pounamu, a precious green stone. The Manaia bird head represents his Dad and the whale tail represents his Dad's journey. When Jarelle gets old enough his Dad will give him the bone carving to look after.
